PRI 2016: Hedman A-Body Headers Breathe New Life Into Chevys

After sixty-one years in business, Hedman Performance Group continues to stay relevant by making quality products that often fill considerably gaps in the marketplace. For example, the Pro-Touring market has really exploded. 1964-1967 A-body GM’s occupy prime real estate in this arena, but must choose between peak performing long-tube headers with ground clearance issues or power-robbing shorties to accompany their big-block Chevy. The solution: mid-length tube headers from Hedman.

“This is the go-to; everybody has been looking for this header forever,” stated National Sales Manager Lee Robinson. “Hedman has only ever offered a full-length header for Chevelle/El Camino. All these cars are dropped… Those cars are low stock. They [the mid-length headers] fit 396 to 502ci. They have a factory exhaust profile – meaning factory exhaust port sizes, flange angles.”

Available in uncoated steel (PN 68660), Black Maxx (PN 68663) and HTC Silver (PN 68666), the mid-length A-body headers are hand-made in the USA out of mild steel. They have a 3/8-inch flange and 1-3/4-inch, 16-gauge mandrel bent tubes that are TIG welded. The collector is a 3-inch ball and socket style for ease of installation. As you’d expect to have on a Pro-Touring build, they are compatible with power steering, A/C and power brakes.

Hedman has also added several new LS swap headers – a universal cast iron design and three application specific designs with 1-3/4-inch stainless steel primaries. The applications include 1967-1969 F-bodies/1968-1974 Novas, 1970-1980 F-bodies, and 1967-1987 Chevy ½- to 1-ton trucks.

For the hardcore DIY’er, Hedman now sells header components so that you can build your own set. Small-block and big-block Chevy flanges with four different diameters, collector flanges, and merge collectors will help you build your very own set of headers exactly the way you want it.

While all of the above were tastefully displayed in Hedman’s booth at this year’s PRI Show, they also had a handful of LS and LT swap parts that didn’t quite make the trip but were documented on a handout.

Through the Trans Dapt brand, the Hedman Performance Group has mount mount kits to put an LS engine into an SN95 Mustang as well as several configurations to put a Gen V LT1 into a car with a factory small-block. 5/8-inch forward, 5/8-inch rearward, and 1-1/8-inch rearward can be accommodated with the complete kit using rubber or polyurethane. Heavy-duty 5/16-inch laser cut plates with Grade 8 hardware anchor the kit.
