PRI 2016: Rod Tschiggfrie’s Radical 1984 Hurst Oldsmobile Street Car

Building a project car can take many twists and turns as it moves along its set path. Sometimes adjustments have to be made to match new goals to keep everything on track. Rod Tschiggfrie from Dubuque, Iowa had a vision to build his own cool car and never deviated from that path. His 1984 Hurst Oldsmobile is one of the more radical and versatile street cars you will ever see.

The Oldsmobile was actually the first car that Rod every purchased, and would eventually turn into this boosted beast you see today. His goal was simple, but it would take a lot of hard work to get there. “I always wanted a really cool car so I took this Olds and made it fit that dream,” Rod says.

Everything on the Olds is made from either carbon fiber or chrome molly. According to Rod the car still has its original VIN, tail lights, and dome light in the car. To get the unique look of the car and get the weight down Rod needed make some serious body modifications. “I had to cut up the car into several pieces to get the molds made. I worked with Spitzer Concepts on the ideas I had for the body. They worked on the lines and helped make the mold that we made the carbon fiber body from,” Rod explains.

The wicked looking carbon fiber body hangs on a custom chassis that was fabricated by Illinois based Chassis Concepts. Rod went with a full 25.2 certified chassis on the Olds to meet his needs. This Olds is more than just what appears to be a Pro Mod, it is a multi-use race car that Rod intends to set records with.

“The car is street legal and will be driven on the street as much as possible. We also set it up to be a drag week type car if we wanted too as well. Our first goal is to break the 300mph barrier as a street car running on pump gas. We want the car to be 100 percent street legal right down to the mufflers when we do it. We are going to try and do it in the half-mile versus the standing mile,” Rod says.

To hit this very lofty goal Rod made sure his Olds is packing plenty of punch under the hood. Powering the car is a 640 cubic-inch motor with a 5.300 bore center. The block and heads are both billet pieces from Dart Machinery that are fully water jacketed to help keep things cool as the Olds cruises down the street. A pair of 98mm Precision turbos provide all the boost needed to motivate the car.

Since Rod will be running the car as a flex-fuel setup he added four injectors per cylinder to let it run on E-85 or straight pump gas. Backing the big motor is a Burno drive that was modified by Todd Tutterow. Rod will be pulling the gears as he rolls down the track via a three-speed Lenco. The car features all the newest technology from MoTec including their ECU, dash, and traction control system.

So don’t let the looks of this car fool you, it’s more than just a show piece. Rod plans on taking the car to the dyno soon to get some final tuning done, and hit the track this spring. “I built this car for fun and just want to see what it can do. I want to break some barriers with this car as a street car,” Rod explains.
