Defiant: The story behind the 1972 AMC Javelin AMX

By now, it’s likely you have seen the 1972 AMC Javelin AMX nicknamed “Defiant” by the Ringbrothers and Prestone. From the moment it made its debut at the 2017 SEMA Show the reason for it’s name was clear: it breaks all the rules. The cars extreme looks, cutting-edge construction techniques, and its four-figure power output have made it one of the most radical designs ever performed on a Javelin.

In the video created by Prestone, the Rings share they owned the car but hadn’t touched it since 1977. With a SEMA deadline, the brothers were up to the challenge and because of a compressed 12-month timeline, they decided to rely on Solidworks digital design tools for the new panels. The panels were then made from aluminum and carbon fiber at the Ringbrothers facilities.

The Javelin gets its stance from the extended wheelbase, which was moved forward six and a half inches from the original location and supported by a Detroit Speed Hydroformed front subframe that was originally engineered for a Camaro. Respectively, the wheel arches were moved and constructed from carbon fiber for a distinctive look.

Other carbon fiber components of the build include the hood, front fenders, and front valance while the tail lights, bumpers, trim and engine bay accessories were all machined out of blocks of aluminum at the Ringbrothers Wisconsin facility.

Under the body, Detroit Speed rack and pinion steering were utilized as well as front sway bars and RideTech shocks for a smooth ride. The front suspension is complemented by a Chevy 12-bolt rear end fitted with a custom four-link suspension built by the Rings.

The AMX receives power from a Wegner Motorsports 6.2-liter Hemi Mopar Hellcat engine fitted with a Whipple 4.5-liter Supercharger. The pairing produces a staggering 1,036 horsepower. To accommodate the power output, a Bowler automatic transmission was mated, and a sturdy QA1 Carbon Fiber driveshaft transfers power to the wheels.

According to the Ringbrothers, Royal Purple engine and transmission oil assure the high-powered motor will be keep it running smoothly, while a new Dodge Hellcat radiator and fan assembly help maintain perfect running temperatures, which is filled with Prestone Antifreeze.

Other engine highlights include a Holley Dominator fuel management system and wiring harness from Painless Wiring. The Javelin’s growl is audible via custom stainless steel Flowmaster headers and exhaust.

Inside, the Ringbrothers went for a minimalistic look with custom seats done in black leather by Upholstery Unlimited. The driver monitors the car from a set of Classic Instruments gauges, and Defiant features a Vintage Air Gen IV Magnum Evap Kit and Kicker sound system.

Defiant sits on a set of HRE Performance Wheels sized at 20×11 in the front and 20×13 in the rear, all wrapped in Michelin tires sized 285/30/20 up front and 335/30/20 out back. To stop the more than 1,000hp on tap, the Javelin uses a set of six-piston caliber Baer brakes.

To complete the look of the car and highlight the bodywork, the exterior of the Javelin is coated in a rich, BASF Glasurit color named “Jalop Gold.”
