There is an old saying, “Something is worth what someone will pay for it…” In the case of big auction house sales, you could argue that they might not be an accurate gauge of classic Corvette values, but with the latest results from Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2017, the event is a reasonably good snapshot of the current collector ‘Vette market.

And that brings us to this C1 Corvette that brought $110,100 when the gavel fell. The 1958 model was undesirable for years and was considered a disappointment after the ultra-clean ’57 model when it debuted. Nowadays, it has come into it’s own as a great example of Harley Earl applying chrome with a trowel. It’s glorious with it’s 1958 only ribbed hood and dual chrome spears on the truck lid.

Barrett-Jackson describes it as follows. “Lot #478 – The 1958 Corvette convertible is a one-year-only design featuring louvered hood, unique chrome trim contouring the trunk and the debut of four headlight system and special dash with all gauges favorably positioned in front of the driver. This beautiful Signet Red example is accented with Snowcrest White coves, charcoal interior and restored originally and mechanically with the matching-numbers reliable 283/230hp engine including rare original carburetor with proper ID tags. The transmission is also a rare factory-ordered Powerglide automatic, reliable and easy to drive. The 1958 model was the fastest, strongest and best handling C1 to date; revered as the most unique and collectible of all early solid axle Corvettes.”
