Do you know that old phrase “time flies?” No one knows this phrase better than Mark. For he has spent the last several years watching this 1976 Pontiac Trans Am give itself away to the elements. It’s an all original 1976 Trans Am that contains a numbers matching 455 and a Munice four-speed manual transmission, of which only 7,100 of were made. 1976 was the last year Pontiac offered the 455, making them the last of the “Big Cube Birds.” The motor was dropped due to stricter emissions laws imposed by the feds. 1976 was also Pontiac’s 50th Birthday which instead of cake or balloons they celebrated with a special 50th Anniversary edition package for all models. For the Trans Am this package consisted of what would become Pontiac’s legendary paint scheme: Black with gold scripts and accents.
Despite being overshadowed by it’s facelifted younger sister from the following year (who would star alongside Burt Reynolds in Smokey and the Bandit), Mark has always preferred the ’76. A good friend of his purchased one while in high school, and its roaring 455 motor, shovel nose front end, and ebony paint made quite an impression on the young Mark.
The exterior of this bird has experienced quite the abuse over the last several years as mother nature has transformed it’s metallic black paint into a rustic brown. Aside from one rip in the drivers seat the grey interior remains intact and looks only slightly worn as if someone parked this car here in the early ’80s.
Mark has grown tired of sitting on the sidelines watching this beauty spiral downwards and has left his card on the windshield, with hopes to have this American beauty back on the road in no time. So how long would you wait before you took drastic measures to acquire the car of your dreams?
