Craigslist Find: 1971 Dodge Demon Drag Car Is All Kinds Of Bad Ass

1971 Dodge DemonThe Dodge Demon is the underrated cousin of the Challenger. It seems like they are seldom seen these days but when they do show up, they always leave quite an impression. Found on Craigslist, this 1971 Dodge Demon was built as a high performance, tire roasting, drag racing machine that leaves fiery tire marks down the quarter mile. Its 440 RB big block fires are lit by an MSD ignition, 516 cast iron heads control the flow, and a Holley 1050 Dominator pumps the juice, all working together for a recipe of 12:1 compression.

This is tied to a 727 Torqueflite transmission which has a few goodies of its own: a reverse valve body and an electric shifter which runs to a narrowed rear with 4.10 gears and 35-spine axles. This Demon means business on the strip, as its interior was stripped for weight savings while a roll cage protects the driver. A massive pair of Hoosier drag tires provides the adhesive to the pavement.

1971 Dodge Demon front bumperIn 1971 Dodge added a new performance package to the their Dart line up, the Dodge Demon. Though its part of the Dart’s line up, the Demon has more in common with the Plymouth Duster. It’s essentially a Duster with a Dart front end and custom tail lights. Other accessories such as a Demon logo, Demon taillights, its own interior and as an option for high impact paint colors were a part of the package.

The Demon came in two available trim packages; the base with a either Slant Six or 318 V8 or the Demon 340 package with the 275 horsepower 340 mill. The Demon was only produced for the 1971-1972 years before it was replaced with the similar designed Dart Sport for 1973.

This Demon is everything a Demon should be, its fast, loud and it has a hellish personality. Its burgundy paint job, combined with the black stripes and unique shape make for an eye catching design. Clearly set up for the strip, a set of drag radials and a little DMV luck and you would have one of the baddest street machines in town.
