Hypothetical question; is it possible for a song to inspire a car? It sounds ridiculous but automobiles have been inspiring musicians for decades. Paul Revere and the Raiders sang about their SS396 and punk band The Dead Milkmen screamed about a “Bitchin’ Camaro.”
When we ran across this ’76 Malibu Classic on eBay, with vintage ’69 Yenko sYc graphics plastered all over it, everyone here in the powerTV office couldn’t help but chuckle at what we were viewing on our monitors. If one were to guess what song could have inspired this monstrosity, personally, I’d like to say “Where’s My Mind” by The Pixies aptly applies.
First of all, the seller on more than one occasion describes this Malibu as a Yenko clone, and any Chevy man worth his salt knows that the only year Yenko marketed a tuner Chevelle/Malibu was ’69, with a reported total of 99 examples being produced. So in order for something to be a “clone” there has to be a real one to begin with.
Obviously, there was never a ’76 Yenko Chevelle/Malibu, so at best we can describe this as one-of-none sYc homage. The most vital ingredient is missing as well, the L72 425hp 427ci. big- block. But resting in its place is a hopped-up 355 SBC with all of the complimentary accessories (750cfm Holley Double-Pumper carburetor, Mallory ignition, Flowmaster exhaust, etc.).
All joking aside, this wouldn’t be a bad car if a potential buyer ditched the Yenko callouts, threw on a decent set of rollers and lowered the thing a couple of inches. We find the Buy It Now price of $6,500 just a ridiculous as the car itself but we think once the seller realizes what he doesn’t have, he’ll be happy to accept $3,500 for it.
