On October 19th, the SCTA will be holding its second to last event of the El Mirage Dry Lake season.
“El Mirage dry lake bed has been home to Land Speed Racing (LSR) for more than half a century. It is located just 30 miles east of a growing high desert community known as the Antelope Valley. Back when Land Speed Racing was young, a group of men that had been racing on the dry lakes for several years, decided to incorporate and create a new racing organization which would enforce safety procedures and promote the sport. Hence the birth of the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) in 1937.”
Land Speed Racing is an integral part of hot rod culture, it is through the spirit of camaraderie and competition combined that enthusiasts before and after WWII pushed the automobile to its limits in an effort to innovate and raise those boundaries to new heights.
The October 19th event will be followed by the closing event which, like the opening event will be a two-day affair. According to the SCTA, “Vehicle inspections begin on the day prior to the race and the racing begins early the next morning. The race day starts with a driver’s meeting, patrol meeting, announcements, and national anthem.”
If you’ve never been to LSR event this is your chance to experience history firsthand. What’s more? Camping is always encouraged, what better way to round out a day of racing than by enjoying the surreal landscape of the lakebed at night?
