The fellas at Gas Monkey Garage seem to receive a lot of heat from the automotive scene. Whether it’s their controversial builds or arguably questionable antics, one thing’s for sure – you either love ’em or you hate ’em. And if you find yourself in the “hate ’em” category, then don’t expect this video to bring a change of heart.
Whether a fan of the Hellcat platform or not, any gearhead is likely to feel that there’s a whole lot wrong with wasting a $60,000, 707 horsepower muscle car. However, we’re not exactly sold that this is, in fact, a true Hellcat that’s being brutalized. Even if they do (for whatever reason) despise the king of modern Mopars, no one in their right mind would waste a machine like this. We can’t imagine that even Gas Monkey would, either.
Given the limited details on this video, not much can be said for certain. However, many are speculating that this is only a rolling chassis, with drivetrain removed for use in their ’68 Dart for an 1/8th-mile event. This seems like the most plausible theory, as Gas Monkey is a business after all; it wouldn’t be too profitable for them to purchase and then destroy a Hellcat just for (mostly negative) publicity. Another is that this car is one that Chrysler would have crushed anyway, and allowed the guys to have a little fun assisting with the destruction.
If you’re a Hellcat fan, you might not appreciate the methodology of this demonstration, for a non-Hellcat fan, you might revel in the mere thought of crushing the competition – quite literally.
Either way, it’s gone, no longer to be put on pavement to burn off some rubber; it has howled it’s final supercharged breath. But what do you think? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments below.
