Home-Built Hero: This ’68 Camaro Is A Long Distance Project

The wheels are American Racing Torque Thrust mags, and the tires are BF Goodrich.

We can’t count how many times we’ve heard about a car being built as a father and son project. Hearing that lets us know that the hobby will continue. Dan Klick of Kiowa, Colorado, told us when he and his son were looking for a project car, their situation made it difficult get a game plan underway. “My son’s name is Danny, and he is currently deployed to Afghanistan. That means all communication between the two of us was long distance, and usually at odd hours,” the senior Dan told us.

But, a difficult situation is not mean an impossible situation, as young Danny was able to locate a couple of cars that were within driving distance of his dad. With translated information in hand, Senior was able to take the time to check out what Junior had found on the web. “A lot of them were trash and beyond my capability to rebuild,” Dan stated.

The interior is mostly stock, except for the Flaming River steering column, the steering wheel, and the five-point harnesses.

A suitable project starting point was eventually located, and the project was finally able to begin. “I found this Camaro, and it had a 396ci big-block under the hood that was backed by a Turbo 400. Unfortunately, the engine was plagued with poor compression on cylinders 6,7, and 8, so we knew that a replacement was on the list of needed items,” said the senior Dan. The car was to be built with a lot of input from young Danny, so wrote his wish list of what his Camaro should have, and dad got underway assembling the dream.

First item on the “to-do” list was getting the body in tiptop condition. “I pulled the carpet and found rust, so I replaced the floorpans,” Dan said. The rest of the body is in as-acquired condition.

Under the hood now resides a 496ci force-fed monster featuring a Procharger. The Turbo 400 was given a once over, and the rearend was rebuilt using 3.73 gears. The dyno proved the Camaro engine was producing 690hp at 5,700 rpm. With 643 lb./ft. of torque at 5,000 rpm, getting the car to develop forward momentum is easy. All that power was created with just 7psi of boost.

The interior received a new back-seat skin and headliner, along with a Flaming River chrome tilt-steering column. It looks mostly original, until you notice the addition of the five-point seat harness.

A 454ci crate engine was bored and stroked to 496 inches. It features a 10.0:1 compression ratio and a Procharger.

“The car is a head turner wherever it goes and is a blast to drive,” said Dan. Next up will be a new paint job, covering the car in GM’s Synergy Green. Although young Dan is still unable to physically enjoy the car, someday he will get his turn behind the wheel in a full-time status.
