Malibu Monday: Assembling the Chevy Big Block Part 2

It’s been awhile since we saw the 396ci Chevy big block all put together for the American Modern 1965 Malibu SS, but now with the valvetrain recently buttoned up, its time for the final assembly of the engine to take place. Here in Part 2 [1] of the two-part assembly, it’s lots of installing of final pieces and tying up of loose ends. Check it out above.

The first component that needs attention is the timing cover, which Tony of Smyth Automotive uses weatherstripping glue to attach a gasket too. Finishing up with some Lucus oil on the timing chain, the timing cover is put into place and secured.

Next is the oil pump and oil pan, which are both installed on the underside of the engine. With the pump and new gaskets in place, a brand new oil pan is christened for the block with some good-old wrench work.

With rattle cans in hand, Rick Drewry from American Modern and Tony from Smyth Automotive set forth to transform the engine from its drab grey.

A bright blue is chosen and allowed to dry just in time for the harmonic balancer and intake to be put on.

Now the engine’s complete! And it’s time to get back to the rest of the build. Be sure to check back next week as we dive deeper into the 1965 Malibu build once again!
