Petty’s Garage Bringing Motorsports History To Life

A legendary name in both motorsports and automotive performance is using his namesake to restore a piece of automotive and motorsports history. Former NASCAR Champion Richard Petty and his high-performance speed shop Petty’s Garage is in the process of restoring a 1936 Chevy Coupe that was once driven by Lee Petty on the beaches of Daytona.

With a goal to return the famed Petty Coupe, nicknamed “Poison Ivy, to its former glory Petty’s Garage will be using personal touches that are reminiscent of the time when Lee handed the keys to his son and former NASCAR crew chief/ engine builder Maurice Petty.

“We are very excited about this project,” said Aftermarket and Restoration Brand Manager Will Cheek. “While some of the projects that come into our shop involve fine-tuning and enhancing some of the hardest working machines on the road today, this will be a reminiscent build that gives the Petty family and their fans a chance to step back in time to when automobiles were hand built with as many personal touches as possible.”

Along with restoring the body and frame, Petty’s Garage build plans also include a freshened interior with new wood inside the doors, which back in the day came with real wood and had wood screws holding it all together.

While white as a race car and currently painted the same bright orange color made famous by the Dukes of Hazard’s own General Lee, the Petty Coupe will be returned to the same black paint job that it once had while being enjoyed as Maurice Petty’s everyday driver.

While both the outside and interior of this ’36 Coupe will look and feel much like its original state there will be an added touch that the entire Petty family are sure to appreciate. Poison Ivy is sure to live up to its formerly given name with a late 50’s Oldsmobile V-8 J2 Golden Rocket Engine, equipped with three two-barrel carburetors and a 10.0:1 compression ratio, which was built by Maurice’s grandson Timmy Petty.

Like many of the Petty’s Garage restoration projects, the goal is to have the newest Petty family heirloom up and running in the next 12-months. Check out pettys-garage.com to follow the progress of this and all other ongoing automotive builds.
