Joseph Young rolled into the gates at San Antonio Raceway for the Dirty South No Prep Series event to have a good time racing with his friends — little did he know that a trip to the True Street finals would be in his future. Young now has his eyes set on the next Dirty South race at Caprock Motorplex in Odessa, Texas and a possible run at the True Street points this season.

No Prep racing wasn’t something that Young had any experience with until he attended a local event in Amarillo, Texas. After that first taste of this style of racing, he was ready for more and wanted to win. “I entered that first event with a different Corvette than I have now and I was totally hooked. After that race, I did some trading to get a car that was more setup for No Prep racing. The car I have now is pretty much built for it,” Young explains.

When it comes to just how quick his 2008 Z06 is, Young doesn’t like to give out numbers, but if you watch the car on the track you realize it has some serious power. The engine is a built 427 cubic-inch LS that uses off-the-shelf parts … no tricks or magic here. The FAST intake gets all the boosted air it can handle from an F-1X ProCharger. To help with power distribution to the racing surface Young added a RPM Transmissions Powerglide transmission and PTC torque converter. The Corvette is still very much a street car and uses all the stock suspension parts, has full leather interior, and ice-cold A/C.

The allure of No Prep racing can be tied to its street racing roots, where the car with the most power doesn’t always win. That type of environment helps build the foundation for a challenging form of racing, and that’s one of the biggest attractions for Young.

“What I like about No Prep racing is the fact that the track levels the playing field for everyone. This Corvette that I have now isn’t necessarily the fastest car out there, but being able to manage the power, adjust for what the track does, and get down the track clean is more important than having the most horsepower.”

After his first race with the Dirty South No Prep Series, Young has made plans to hit as many races as he can and possibly make a run at the True Street Championship.

“I like their events; they’re well run for sure. Everybody who is involved with the event are great and Mike [Murillo] is so down to earth and treats everyone so well. I might make a run at the Dirty South True Street title, that’s not off the table yet I just need to see if I want to make that big of a travel commitment,” Young says.
