“5 days, 4 sleepless nights, 100 HERO4 Blacks, 1,000 lbs of gear, and 2 months in the edit bay” is how the folks at GoPro summarize the making of Gymkhana 7 with Ken Block. As interesting as Block’s RTR Hoonicorn Mustang build was for this video, the production behind it is fascinating in its own right.

For those unfamiliar, rather than utilize one of his racing team’s rally cars, as Block typically does for the Gymkhana videos, they decided to do a completely bespoke build for the seventh installment. The car they built was a custom wide body 1965 Ford Mustang coupe with an inboard pushrod suspension, an 845 horsepower Roush Yates 410 cubic inch 6.7-liter Ford V8 engine and a Sadev SC90-24 gearbox which sends power to all four corners by way of a custom all-wheel-drive system.

In this candid look at what goes into making these videos, not only do we get some more insight into what it’s like behind the wheel of that monstrous Mustang, we also see the insane quantity of GoPro cameras (and subsequent footage) that are required to put together these killer videos. Custom multi-camera rigs, quadcopter setups, at least one actual helicopter, and a whole lot of sticky mounts were all part of the deal in order to make the production look the way the crew wanted it to, which included shoots in the Chinatown marketplace, Randy’s Donuts, the LA Riverbed, beneath an overpass on the 710 freeway, and at the iconic Hollywood sign.

Of course, most of us are here for the smoke show, and the clip certainly doesn’t disappoint on that front either.
