The Big Red Camaro is one of the most highly recognized race cars of all time. Not only did this fully-built red Camaro set records and make a name for itself in all-out open road racing back in the late 80s and early 90s, it also acted as the founder of the entire pro-touring movement. This is the car that dreams are made of.

Inspired by his long fascination and love of the Big Red Camaro, filmmaker Josh Oliver has created a documentary following the recent accomplishments of the legendary car. You see, after the car was put in a museum back in 1996, it was overhauled and set up for racing once again in 2004. Since 2010, Oliver has been following Big Red and is out to remind people just how bad Big Red still is. Check out the sneak peak of the Big Red documentary above.

The legend of Big Red started back in 1987 with father and son duo Dan and RJ Gottlieb aiming to create a car that would beat any production car on the road. Using a stock ‘69 Camaro as the base and a roaring 540ci big-block under the hood, Big Red was born. After an accident totaled the car in early 1988, Big Red was rebuilt and back chasing dreams at the end of the year. Very soon, Big Red became known for its high speed and record-setting capabilities in open road racing nation wide.

In 1996, Big Red was semi-retired to a museum where it sat for eight years until the Gottliebs decided to revive the legend in 2004. Since the car’s revival, Big Red has been driven by RJ in the Mojave Mile, Texas Mile, Silver State Classic Challenge, Spectre Challenge and Big Bore Bash at Willow Springs Raceway.

Since 2010, Oliver has paired with Team Big Red to track the legend’s continued journey and make the ultimate Big Red documentary. Using high-tech camera systems usually reserved for big-budget Hollywood feature films, Oliver has captured over 160 hours of Big Red footage, interviews, and unique shots of the legendary Camaro. By using helicopters and planes, Oliver has been able to capture never before seen up-close footage of Big Red hitting speeds of over 160mph. Add that to in-car camera shots and insider information and this documentary promises to be the no-miss flick of 2012.

We’re stoked to see Big Red back in the spot light and the car’s continued career highlighted so exclusively.
