Chrysler has announced a recall affecting approximately 27,000 vehicles, including some 2010 Dodge Challengers. According to documents filed with the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration (NHTSA), affected vehicles could experience a separation of the crimped end of the power steering pressure hose assembly.
While no accidents or injuries have been reported, it is possible that leaking power steering fluid could contact hot engine components, resulting in potential a fire. Dealers will inspect and replace, as needed, the power steering hoses free of charge. Only certain drivetrain combinations are affected.
According to documents filed with the NHTSA, the defective components resulted from a change in the hose material. The previous material had to be replaced due to the closing of a raw material supplier’s plant. Ongoing supplier testing of the hose assemblies revealed the problem, which was eventually traced to batch-to-batch variation in the base hose material.
Other vehicles affected include 2010 Dodge Avenger and Journey models, 2010 Chrysler 300 and Sebring cars and some 2011 RAM trucks. The recall is expected to begin this month.
