PRI 2015: Ford Rolls Out Coyote Power Module With Auto Transmission

Since its release as a crate engine in 2011, Ford Performance’s Coyote 5.0 has been one of the company’s most popular crate engine offerings in history. The Coyote found its way into applications ranging from street rods to race tracks, and everything in between.

The control pack offered for the Coyote from Ford Performance has always been for a manual transmission. While the aftermarket has come up with solutions using older, non-computer controlled transmissions, as well as recently a few companies offering controllers for modern Ford transmissions, Ford Performance itself has never offered an automatic transmission compatible Coyote controller. That changed at this year’s PRI Show.

This Fox body Mustang was the trail car for the first automatic transmission Coyote Power Module.

Want A Manual Transmission

Want a manual transmission package instead? Ford offers the same engine package with a Tremec Magnum six-speed, and complete clutch package. (PN M-9000-PMCM).

Ford announced at the PRI show its latest Coyote power module, which includes a 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission, as well as a plug and play compatible controller (PN M-9000-PMCA). Ford Performance’s Andrew Casselberry tells us “When we initially offered the Coyote crate package in 2011, we were focused on the manual transmission market. Recently, with the latest Coyote ECU from the 2015 Mustang, as well as a new addition to our calibration team, we came up with a package that allows us to offer a manual or automatic transmission option.”

Further sweetening the deal is Ford’s packaging of the engine, transmission, and controller together in one part number. “We see this opening up an even larger market for Coyote swaps, as the classic and street rod crowd, and the guys who may just want to cruise have been asking for this option, and we’ve had to refer them elsewhere for a transmission solution. The 6R80 has also been a favorite of many street car drag racers in recent years and this may help a few of them out by offering a new solution.”
