PRI 2016: Fluidampr Drowns Crankshaft Vibrations For Life

2 PRI Show 2016 Fluidampr

If you push your engine to increase its performance there’s a greater chance of introducing some unwanted harmonics. These vibrations can lead to engine damage, so you want to make sure you have a proper crankshaft damper. While there are numerous choices available, Fluidampr uses a unique design to keep those bad vibes at bay for the life of your engine.

“What separate ours from a rubber or elastomeric-style damper is that we use a viscous fluid technology,” Ivan Snyder of Fluidampr told us at The PRI Show. “…All of our dampers are manufactured the same way. We CNC machine this housing, we drop this inertia ring in there and we laser weld the cover on.”

Rather than absorbing those vibrations with a rubber insert, Fluidampr units use a ring submerged in silicone fluid to soak them up.1 PRI Show 2016 Fluidampr

“Every time the engine fires, the crankshaft twists ahead of its natural rotation and rebounds back. That’s what causes torsional vibration to go back into the engine,” Ivan explained. “With our damper, this inertia ring shears through that silicone fluid, absorbs that crankshaft twist, converts that energy into heat and dissipates that out through the damper.”

This design is said to offer more durability and flexibility than traditional damper designs.

“With rubber dampers the heat breaks down the rubber and causes it to crack and come apart. With our damper being a viscous damper, it will last the life of the engine. They never go bad,” Ivan added. “The one other key advantage over rubber is that they are tuned for a specific range, say 50 Hz, and anything beyond that causes the damper to overwork itself. A viscous damper is able to control all frequencies throughout the entire rpm range.”
