PRI 2017: Aeromotive Goes Brushless With New Gear Pump Offerings

Brushless is the name of the game for Aeromotive in 2018, as the fuels system manufacturer has brought brushless DC motor technology to its popular range of drag racing fuel pumps.

In a typical DC motor, brushes are utilized to handle changes in polarity between a pair of opposing magnets (or stators, as they’re called) that spin a rotor containing an electromagnet. While they get the job done, brushes do eventually wear out, create electrical noise, limit maximum rotor speed, and limit how many poles the rotor can have. Technology, however, has allowed the design to be changed to brushless, wherein the magnets are placed on the rotor and the electromagnets to the stator. The result is a more powerful, more efficient, cooler, and longer-lasting motor that requires less power draw, and therefore a more rugged and robust fuel pump.

Brushless technology is obvious — everything is going that way. It’s never going to wear out like a traditional brushed motor that’s eventually going to fail. – Jackson Lueg, Aeromotive

While this isn’t Aeromotive’s first foray into brushless motors in their pumps, it represents a big shift in their product lineup, as their popular Eliminator and A1000 pumps are now brushless (the Eliminator in 3.0 GPM and A1000 2.0 GPM). The new Brushless Gear Pumps have also been launched, in 3.5 and 5.0 GPM capacities, in a range of configurations: external in-line, direct drop-in, and as complete in-tank fuel cell packages.

“Brushless technology is obvious — everything is going that way. It’s never going to wear out like a traditional brushed motor that’s eventually going to fail,” notes Aeromotive’s Jackson Lueg.

“We’ve been working on this for decades — we took what we know from the little mechanical pumps and mated it to a brushless motor. The Gear Pump versions are going to be capable of those really high pressures without dropping off in flow at over 90 psi and such, so that’s going to be really trick to have that extreme of flow. What we really designed this for is the guys that are doing 1,500 horsepower on E85 or something on a street car. When they need that much more fuel they might go with two pumps, and there are always complications if that second pump doesn’t turn on or something, and if you can get it down to one pump, it’s always great. This is going to find its way into a lot of E85 applications because of the need for additional fuel, but these are a great fit for any type of common fuel.”

Aeromotive’s direct drop-in’s will appeal to the Drag Pak, COPO Camaro, and Cobra Jet drag racers, in particular, who can simply drop this pump into their existing fuel cell. For those who want a whole new setup, they can also purchase the aforementioned fuel cell packages, in 6, 15, or 20-gallon capacities.
