Since opening the doors in 1971, Hughes Performance has positioned itself — through their research and development efforts — as one of the go-to companies in the transmission industry. If you think these guys are some stand-behind-the-counter salesmen that don’t really know anything, you really need to think again. They build and test everything they sell, and its race team competes in everything from Super Street to Super Eliminator. Time on the track gives them invaluable information that can be used for the research and development of new products.
“We’ve teamed with High-Performance Lubricants of Manteno, Illinois, and developed a Hughes-specific blended fluid that features all high-quality synthetic components, with a unique additive package,” says Pete Nichols, sales manager and ‘tech guy’. “It has very high thermal stability across a wide range of temperatures.”
In other words, it is right at home in a tow vehicle, race, or street car. In fact, when used in a street car, you can expect a service life of roughly five years. Usage in a race car will be around two to three years.
Since transmission performance is what they do, Nichols gave us some insight into the parts they are creating for the six-speed market.
“We are expanding our torque converter line to include the GM 6L80E, 6L90E, and Ford 6R80. We have developed some new components like billet 9-inch, 9 1/2-inch, and 10 1/2-inch converters. We offer single lock-up discs, triple lock-up discs, and a variety of different stator designs to accommodate everyone. Nichols continues, “We can now address the needs of late-model enthusiasts developing a lot of horsepower,” he says.
With their new converter and fluid line of products, Hughes Performance truly is a one-stop shop for your street and performance transmissions needs. The quality of its products, and using the latest innovations in already-tested applications, guarantees you get the parts or complete transmission you need.
