A name like COMP Cams is hard to miss when you attend the PRI Show. With close to forty years of being in business (which will be celebrated in 2016), the Memphis-based firm has been nothing if not sharp and innovative when it comes to crafting quality parts. We spoke with Kevin Winstead about what COMP and its affiliate companies had to offer

First up was the new solid aluminum LS block from RHS, boasting a raised cam location and short- and tall-deck fitments. “For the guys that are running methanol, twin turbos, all-out 2,000-plus horsepower cars, this is what they’re going to want,” said Winstead. With its inherent lack of water jackets to keep everything cool, the new block is purely a race-only product that can confidently handle short bursts of intense power.

“The methanol does handle a bit of the cooling, but the other part of it is the aluminum construction that dissipates heat a lot better [than cast iron],” said Winstead.

Left - The new block offers easy access to the lifters without removal of the cylinder head, easing the service process int he field for racers. Right - The block comes with clearance already built in for long-stroke crankshafts.

Elsewhere, we found COMP’s new Sportsman Solid Roller Lifters, which offers customers the sought-after middle ground between the entry-level Endure-X and top-shelf Elite lines. “The Sportsmans are a step above the Endure-X lifters, allowing for either a roller bearing or bushing,” said Winstead. “We’ve just introduced an offset seat for those applications where cylinder heads and lifter placement require such a thing.”

COMP’s Sportsman line of lifters can be had with either roller bearings or bushings, and currently fit SBC and BBC motors.

Making their debut at PRI, the lifters are the solution to many requests from COMP fans who had asked for bushings and rebuildability. “Our Elite series is not rebuildable, but the Sportsman series is,” explained Winstead. “The body can be reused and rebuilt typically one to two times thanks to 8620 alloy that is very robust. We’ve also machined it internally to keep it lightweight.”

COMP_06For folks that run in bracket races and plan to do so for an entire season without worry or fear, the Sportsman series is just what the doctor ordered. “As far as fitment goes, we’ve currently got offerings for small- and big-block Chevy motors, with developments opening up for small-block Ford as well as big-block and HEMI applications for Chrysler vehicles,” said Winstead.

We’ll be keeping an eye open for when these new products hit shelves. Feel free to do the same by visiting COMP online and on its Facebook page.
