SEMA 2015: Scoggin-Dickey’s Parts Center Is Full Of Crate Engines

The GM experts at Scoggin-Dickey have a monster selection of engines and parts — for LS combinations along with traditional small- and big-block Chevrolet — to choose from, built and waiting for customers to purchase, as well as short-blocks that can be completed to complete engines per customer specifications.

“We start with GM blocks, or RHS, Dart, or Brodix blocks. Once the customer decides what engine size they’re looking for, we can select the internals we will use,” says Brian Gruben, Scoggin-Dickey’s senior tech of Engine Development.

IMG_9718The company checks and decks all blocks to ensure quality control, then they are bored and honed with a new hone that does both sides in one process. Each block is honed to the manufacturer’s specifications to ensure ring seal. From there, each block is stroker clearanced if necessary, the block is machined and cleaned, and new camshaft bearings are installed.

“I handle the LS engines, but Alan Bracy, our shop manager, handles all of the small- and big-block Chevrolet builds. We’ll use GM, Manley, Callies, or Crower crankshafts — there are several different options depending on stroke, availability and usage,” Gruben explains.

Piston and ring selection also depends on customer requirements; Scoggin-Dickey chooses from all of the major piston manufacturers like Manley, Diamond, and Wiseco, among others. Piston rings are typically delivered with the pistons, or from one of the major manufacturers like Total Seal or Akerly & Childs.

The company offers several different levels of engine builds. A customer can choose from an economy-style build, or go as wild as their budget will allow.

The LS packages on the shelf range from 346 cubic inches up through 454 cubic inches, along with big-block Chevrolet short-blocks for classes like Super Gas, Super Comp, and Top Sportsman. Scoggin-Dickey also stocks ancillary parts that customers will need to complete a build, and can offer custom camshaft selection as well.
