TCI Auto has long been a leader when it comes to automatic transmissions for domestic cars, regardless of whose nameplate is on the hood. Continuing the tradition, TCI has released their new 4x Four-Speed Automatic Transmission Series. The lineup allows the easy use of the popular GM 4L80E or 700R4 transmission in non-GM applications. Adapter bellhousings are available for small- and big-block Ford, Ford Modular, small- or big-block Chrylser, Gen III Hemi, Buick, Pontiac, and Olds patterns.
“We’ve got a couple of versions to solve the problems of the Mopar and Ford guys who have never really had a good overdrive solution for their street-strip transmissions,” says Kevin Winstead of TCI Auto. “The mechanical version is based on ‘Ol Reliable,’ the 700R4, and can be adapted to any application in just about any domestic application.”
The 700R4 version has an adapter flexplate, transmission cooler, dipstick, and all the necessary installation hardware. Needing no additional controllers or the like, it uses TCI’s Constant Pressure Valve Body to allow more flexibility when setting part-throttle shift points, and is available to support two power levels: 550 and 750 horsepower.
Then for cars that might be making more steam, or just prefer the versatility offered by an electronically-controlled transmission, the other half of the new TCI 4x line will pique your interest. “Our fully-electronic version is based on the 4L80E and is a more robust platform. This is a strong transmission with overdrive, and something that will fit in pretty much any packaging application,” says Winstead. The electronic overdrive 4x is rated to 875 horsepower and can be controlled with an original GM transmission controller, or a TCI EZ-TCU unit.
