They say you learn something new every day. We are used advertising not making the cut for broadcast television because it’s a bit too racy. In the UK, however, it’s apparently not allowed for advertising to get a little too racy when it comes to selling cars. Such was the case when 12 people complained to the country’s Advertising Standards Authority about a Mustang commercial.

The commercial highlights the frustrations of modern life and offers driving a Mustang as a way to release some of the pressure. Classing it up is a voiceover reading “Do not go gentle into that good night” by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.

Apparently, however, the Mustang was being driven a bit to aggressively — or, you know, the way most enthusiasts to enjoy driving a Mustang — in the ad.

“We therefore considered that the ads suggested that driving was a way of releasing anger, which put the driver, other motorists and pedestrians at risk,” the ASA ruled. “As such, we concluded that the ads encouraged unsafe driving and breached the CAP Code.”

As a result of that ruling, the ASA said. “The ads must not appear again in their current form. We told Ford Motor Company Ltd that their advertising must not encourage unsafe driving, including by depicting driving as a way of relieving anger.”

Fortunately, there is the, well, the internet, so the commercial has not gone quietly after all. It still lives on Ford of France’s YouTube channel for all of us to enjoy.
