Driving Edelbrock’s 08 Mustang with their 700 hp Coyote Crate Engine

Edelbrock has been building performance parts since pretty much the beginning of hot rodding.  In fact, no matter what type of vehicle you drive, whether it be a brand new Mustang or something a bit more vintage, Edelbrock has the performance products trusted by thousands of enthusiasts to keep their car at the top of its game. Nothing proves this better than some of Edelbrock’s latest offerings, including their Supercharged 5.0L Coyote Crate Engine. We were lucky enough to test out the crate engine option recently in Edelbrock’s own 2008 Mustang GT and boy was it a blast.

Plenty of Horses for This Pony

With the Edelbrock name prominently displayed on this Mustang’s side, there’s no doubt that what we were about to experience was amazing performance.

The 2008 Edelbrock Mustang GT is a relatively stock test vehicle, equipped only with the company’s Supercharged 5.0L Coyote Crate Engine and an upgraded SPEC clutch, which was installed so the company could more easily dyno test the car, according to Edelbrock’s Vice President of Research and Development, Rob Simons. The combination is potent enough to put down 615.4 hp and 588 ft-lbs of torque at the rear tires on the dyno.

Sure, there are plenty of other areas where more upgrades could be done, but the Edelbrock Mustang proves just what kind of performance you can get from a vehicle by just doing an engine swap on an already hefty performance machine.

So what is the best application for Edelbrock’s engine, well according to Simons, anything it can fit into. That means classic Mustang, modern Mustang, muscle car and hot rod guys alike are all in luck.

The Edelbrock 5.0L Coyote Crate Engine is a complete crate engine perfect for throwing into any Ford project car. Built by Ford from a brand new Coyote aluminum block, this proven powerhouse is equipped with a forged and balanced crankshaft, Manley forged aluminum pistons, stock Ford camshafts, and forged Manley H-beam connecting rods. Although it’s performance oriented, the crate engine also features a reasonable 9.5:1 compression ratio, meaning safe and reliable performance on 91 octane fuel.

Topping off the Edelbrock Coyote crate engine is the company’s E-Force Supercharger System, complete with Eaton TVS 2300 cc/rev rotors. Not only does this system provide incredibly quiet operation, it also provides unparalleled efficiency and OEM reliability. That’s right, even with a supercharger and plenty more power than your vehicle’s stock engine, the Edelbrock Coyote crate engine is just as reliable as the factory equipment.

If you’re looking to up the performance and power of your Ford project car without losing any driveability, the Edelbrock Supercharged 5.0L Coyote Crate Engine is a one-stop shot for greatly improving your vehicle.

Included in the engine upgrade package are all the essential supercharger components, including an electric intercooler water pump, recovery tank and plumbing, fuel rails, 50 lb/hr fuel injectors, a re-usable air filter and even a mass air flow sensor housing. Front end drive accessories, like alternator pulleys, the water pump, idlers, tensioners, belts and all the necessary hardware are also included.

So what does all this mean when it comes to power numbers? Well, according to Edelbrock, the Supercharged 5.0L Coyote Crate Engine is rated at 700 hp and 606 ft-lbs of torque.

For convenience, the Coyote crate engine package comes in two different forms, one with all the electronics and accessories part number 46770 and one with no electronics included part number 46880. The first package includes the crate engine with the E-Force supercharger already installed, as well as a wiring harness, electronic throttle pedal, oxygen sensors, a mass air flow sensor, pre-programmed ECU, water pump, alternator, air filter, fuse box, hose, idlers, belts and all the necessary hardware.

On the chassis dyno the 700 hp at the flywheel translates to 615.4 hp and 588 ft-lbs of torque to the rear tires.

“It comes ready to run, out of the box with a calibrated ECU, just bolt it in and you have 700 hp with 91 octane gas,” says Simons. Perfect for the person looking to purchase or use their own electronics with the Coyote engine, the second package includes the engine with supercharger already installed like the first package, as well as the mass air flow sensor housing, air filter, water pump, alternator, hose idlers, belts and necessary hardware. Edelbrock recommends using their universal heat exchangers (part # 15405, 15406 or 15407) for a complete engine install.

edelbrock_2008_3Diving Into Those Power Ratings

As we stated previously, the Edelbrock Supercharged 5.0L Coyote Crate Engine is rated at 700hp and 606lb-ft of torque. Of course, this is prior to being put in the car and used against the forces of friction to power the Mustang. So we wanted to know what the performance numbers meant when transferred into the Mustang’s engine bay and asked Simons what to expect.

According to Edelbrock’s chassis dyno, the Mustang laid down a respectable 615 hp and 588 ft-lbs of torque with the Edelbrock Coyote crate engine in place. But, as Simons told us, there is always room to grow.

“You can gain even more power with upgraded camshafts, long tube headers and better gas,” Simons stated. He also mentioned that performance enthusiasts would also benefit from upgrading to a sturdier transmission, bigger tires and better brakes. Obviously we can’t argue but for just the crate engine upgrade, the Edelbrock Mustang is pretty stellar!

Driving Impressions

The key to the supercharged Coyote engine package is not only to get increased power, but also maintain overall drivability, an asset that has become increasingly in demand as more and more factory vehicles are equipped for performance right from the assembly floor. So to see just how driveable the 2008 Edelbrock Mustang would be with the Coyote Crate Engine upgrade, we hit the streets behind the wheel of this fifth-generation masterpiece with Power Automedia Group Editor Mark Gearhart behind the wheel.

edelbrock_2008_5Upon turning the engine over for the first time, we immediately noticed the performance. Even with a cold start, the Mustang performed beautifully as the engine immediately burbled to life with not even the slightest hesitation. We also noticed the performance of the car through the warmup process, cruising through town at low low RPMs and doing your basic stop light to stop light daily driving. As Power Automedia Gearhart explained, “The car drives like a stock ’08 GT.” Of course we’re talking about a stock 2008 with a lot more power.

After proceeding through the warmup, we got on the gas a bit more in the modern pony car, only to be faced with even more performance. Through the entire RPM band, the Mustang proved to have just as good of handling qualities and throttle response as a factory vehicle. When dropping from 5th gear to 3rd however, we did notice a vast improvement on the power spectrum, one that we would easily compare to even the latest and greatest 2013 GT500.

Final Note

It’s not every day that you find a complete supercharged Coyote Crate Engine package with so much power and drivability behind it. Of course, Edelbrock is not into providing the ordinary.

“It is complete, hassle free, reliable, and offers great drivability,” Simons told us of the crate engine upgrade. “It is also the highest HP package available to run on 91 octane pump gas. Also, where else can you get 700HP with a 2 year, unlimited mileage warranty?” Offering extreme levels of performance, with new car drivability the Edelbrock E-Force Supercharged Coyote Crate Engine is an excellent package whether you’re updating a late model Mustang, or building a street rod, muscle car or classic, you can’t go wrong with this one.
