General Motors Files Trademark For Grand Sport

Ever since 1963, the term Grand Sport has meant something to the Corvette faithful. Granted, when the 1963 “lightweights” were new, they weren’t called Grand Sports, but the name eventually stuck.

The term had enough tug that Chevrolet created another round of Grand Sports for the 1996 production year. While not considered lightweights, they were pretty smart-looking Corvettes, with their Admiral Blue bodies, and longitudinal white stripes giving away the presence of an LT4 engine under-hood. The Grand Sport moniker returned during the C6 and C7 Corvette generations and, if this new filing on May 26th of this year is any indicator, it may be due for another round of performance goodness. GM’s most recent application for the trademark is dated May 26, 2022, under serial number 97430541 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Where Would You Put A Grand Sport?

While the 1963 variants would be considered extreme and the C4 Grand Sports were in fact the higher-horsepower variants, recent history leads us to believe that if there is another Grand Sport Corvette, it will be nestled nicely between the base model Stingray and a higher-performance variant. That said, we’ve all seen and heard the Z06. Would it make sense to put the Grand Sport between the Z-car and the Stingray? Or, would you rather see it as a higher-performing ‘Vette with possibly yet another variant on the horizon?

1996 Corvette Grand Sport

The C6 and C7 Grand Sports were excellent handling cars with all the go-fast goodies of the ZR1, save for the supercharged engine. And, they are still great cars! Should the next Grand Sport still use a naturally aspirated engine? LT6 perhaps? Our first thought was to combine it with a hybrid or electric, but rumors of that car are already out there. If the car is at that stage of development, we think it would be a little late for GM to be applying for the trademark.

So, perhaps GM is simply holding on to what they’ve already done. Maybe they are looking forward to producing another variant of the famed model. How about a lightweight model of the Z06 for those track days and corner carvers? That would be an awesome throwback to the cars that put the Grand Sport name on the fast track to greatness!
