Hays New Dragon Claw 1150 Clutch Requires No Break-In

Holley recently took the wraps off of their new Hays Dragon Claw 1150 clutch and we must say it looks to be a very capable piece. As you may have inferred from its name, the clutch is rated to handle 1,150 lb.-ft. of torque coming off the crank and Holley/Hays claims that it maintains its street manners while doing so.

The clutch is a dual disc setup to provide more surface area for clamping and features proprietary ceramic friction material. Holley says that the use of the medium eliminates the need to break the clutch in. We don’t know about you, but a clutch that can handle that much power and doesn’t require a break-in period sounds pretty good to us.

To avoid having to increase the pressure plate spring rate, and thus increase pedal effort, Holley has developed a system that uses centrifugally engaged levers that apply more clamping forces as rpm increases. This allows the clutch to have near-stock pedal effort and still handle the clamping forces required to harness over 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque, making it a great choice for any high-horsepower application that will see more than just track duties.

Not only should it handle gargantuan amounts of power without giving you a charley horse in your left calf, it is also incredibly lightweight. Tipping the scales at just 35 pounds, this clutch seemingly offers the best of everything in one economical package.

The housing is made from forged 7075 T6 aircraft-grade aluminum while the flywheel is a forged 6061 T6 piece, giving you strength in all the right places. Sprung hubs help keep the transmission happy and ensure long life and smooth operation.

Stay tuned as we put one of these bad boys to the test in the coming months to find out just how streetable this behemoth really is.
