As we venture across the U.S. on our Stateside Shop Tour, we’re focusing on shops in all 50 states that do work on Bow Tie cars and trucks. This week’s stop puts us in Buford, Georgia, at the Hot Rod Syndicate, which is owned by Brad Shadburn.
The shop is currently working on a ‘59 Chevrolet Apache, and the owner has asked that the truck retain a stock look on the outside, but has given the shop the go-ahead to update the rest with modern pieces. That allowed the shop to add a few amenities like Classic Performance Parts power steering, and of course, Vintage Air A/C. The stock I-beam front axle will be retained, but it has been completely rebuilt, and disc brakes have been added. A 383 small-block with a 700R4 transmission will power the truck, and the body has been painted black using Deltron base coat and Concept 2021 clear.
In the interest in safety, the Syndicate has moved the fuel tank out of the interior to the rear of the chassis. The chassis has recently been finished, but does not yet have the factory style wheels and hubcaps to enhance the stock look the customer desires. When the cab and bed are mated, the dash will be installed and the factory-style instruments will be electric. New glass will be installed along with new weather stripping and Dynamat for sound deadener. The wiring is updated via an American Auto Wire kit, and a radio from Antique Automobile Radio, Inc., will provide either the weekly farm reports, or necessary tunes. All factory trim, including the grille, door handles, trim around the back of the cab, and the bumpers have been rechromed. The interior will be redone in stock form, but sewn in a red vinyl. The upholstery is the only part of the build that is farmed out. This truck is a long term project, and approximately a year has been spent on it so far.
We asked Brad about his shop: “We’ve done quite a few pick-ups lately and recently delivered a Nova and a Camaro. We don’t specialize solely in Chevys, but they are a big part of our overall builds. The Hot Rod Syndicate has been in business now for over 10 years. We’ve been in our new location for two years.”
We asked about his background and employees. “I’ve been in this business for over 25 years. First it was a hobby, then I worked for other shops. My son, Justin works with me full-time, and is very detail-oriented and talented at such a young age. Brent has 20 plus years in the business, Mike has 40 plus years, and Dale has 30 plus years. Everyone has their own unique talents and are detailed oriented. The Syndicate has a passion for old cars – it’s more than a job for us, it’s our lifestyle.”
