The World’s First 200 MPH CTS-V Wagon

When it comes to performance, the second-gen CTS-V’s are no joke. Even in their heavyweight trim with a stock engine, these cars are capable of 13-second 1/4-mile times at 109 mph with a top speed of 163. And while these numbers are impressive, these cars really start to shine when modified. It’s not uncommon to find these cars deep in the 9-second range with a stock bottom end and the factory blower.

Josh Spence’s CTS-V wagon is the craziest one we have seen to date. At one point, the V housed a 427 cubic-inch powerplant that not only had a monstrous Magnuson supercharger but also had a turbo inline, giving the air charge an extra boost. The problem was, they couldn’t get the combination to make over 1,200 horsepower. So, the team decided to remove the supercharger and replace it with a billet intake manifold from Plazmaman. This single change with a cam swap allowed the car to pick up some serious power. In the Video, Spence states that the V made 1,500 horsepower, but that was maxing out the dyno. They expect the car is making 1,750-1,800 horsepower at the wheels.

From the side of the car, it looks relatively stock other than the Weld racing wheels. However, if you glance at it from the back, there’s a lot going on that gives the car away, like the parachute and the massive hole in the rear bumper for exhaust.

While it’s hard to tell how fast a car is going down a 1/2-mile track, you can usually gauge its speed off another vehicle. For instance, in the 1320 Video, Spence lines up against the almighty V-12 Viper and absolutely destroys it by bus lengths. This wagon is violent and gets even more so as Spence manually shifts the gears through a six-speed transmission. That’s right; this car was originally equipped with a manual trans and still is.

Spence was on the hunt for a 200 mile per hour pass at this event, and he wound up putting it all together after several 197 mph passes. In his last approach in the video, he managed to run the 1/2-mile track with a final speed of 200.26 mph, making it the world’s first 200 mph CTS-V wagon.

After the pass, Spence was met in the pits by a crew member with a bottle of champagne as part of the celebration. He then showed off his speed by running off, avoiding the shower. Spence said the wagon is at its limit and needs larger tires for him to feel safe going any faster.

Congratulations to Spence and all of those involved in this accomplishment. This 200 mph CTS-V wagon is simply incredible.
