Throwback Thursday: Generator To Powermaster Alternator Conversion

Alternator

We were very pleased with the ease of installation and the electrical power the system provides. No more dim lights at night slowing down for a stop sign. This is a necessary safety upgrade for vintage cars and trucks that are intended to be daily drivers.

It’s hard to believe that another Thursday is barreling down on us, announcing the impending end of another work week. I don’t know about you, but I have already planned what I’ll be working on this weekend. If your plans involve upgrading that old generator to a better battery-charging alternator, we can help with that. Once again, we celebrate another editorial look-back, and jump into the way back machine to open the Power Automedia vault that houses our vast collection of articles and revisit another great informational piece.

Alternator

Generators are good for powering a house when the electricity goes out. Alternators are for cars.

In this Throwback Thursday, we’re taking a leap back to Septemeber 2016. That’s when we jumped head first into showing you what goes into swapping out that old, outdated generator with a quality alternator from Powermaster Performance when we published, Project Geronimo: Generator To Powermaster Alternator Conversion.

In the original article, Bobby Kimbrough worked with Powermaster’s J.R Richmond to explain why you need to consider this upgrade. For instance, a generator is only supplying a charge that is directly proportionate to the RPM the pulley is spinning. An alternator operates the same way as a generator, but is much more efficient. Alternators usually have three separate windings that allow for a smoother electrical output, can be brought up to speed more quickly and can develop good power at lower RPM.

When you upgrade, you will need to change brackets. These are usually accessible at swap meets or online auctions.

J.R. goes into detail about how to choose the correct alternator for you engine, and even discusses myths and truths about one and three-wire alternators. Since you need to know how many amps your system needs, the original article even gives examples of amp usage for a myriad of automotive amenities like headlights, taillights, sound systems, and electric fans.

Bobby even walks readers through the wiring process for the upgrade.

There is a lot more information in the original article, and If you’re looking for a reason to upgrade your antiquated generator, this article explains why Powermaster should be your go-to source, and for that reason, I feel that, Generator To Powermaster Alternator Conversion is a great piece to showcase in this week’s Throwback Thursday. You really need to check out the original article. You’ll be glad you did.
