The National Corvette Museum may have been a site of tragedy during the whole sinkhole debacle of 2014, but the Bowling Green hotspot also gets to be a site of joy and happiness every once in a while too. In this instance, it was a moment that married couple Luther and Lula Cowden will treasure for the rest of their lives.

According to Lula, the story goes that Luther had gotten them on the road from their home in Tampa on a mystery trip. The duo drove some 700 miles up to Nashville, Tennessee, and stayed the night in a hotel. The next morning, Luther claimed he had friends up north that were eager to see him, and set off with Lula to go see them.

“So we get in the car and we’re going north, and I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I hope we’re not going to Detroit!'” said Lula. “So we exit off and I say, ‘Oh, there’s that Corvette place where the Corvettes fell,’ and we stop for a restroom break.”

As Lula walked on down the main corridor, Luther stopped to read a sign placed in front of a red C7 on display. Luther’s long-awaited surprise paid off when Lula leaned in close and read the words: “Congratulations Luther and Lula Cowden, owners of a new 2015 Torch Red Corvette Coupe.”

“I’m more than excited,” said Lula. “I’m just elated. I’m getting a headache.” Luther adds, “Of course, when [she] screamed and hollered, that sort of got everyone’s attention!”

The icing on the cake is getting to see the Cowdens casually drive off in their brand new Stingray, with cheers and applause from other visitors as they do so. Our hats are off to Luther and his carefully plotted gift to himself and his wife.
