It’s not everyday that you see an early model Jaguar XJ, and if you do, it’s either a heap, or it’s in immaculate condition; that’s not the case here! This inconspicuous 1970’s era Jaguar XJ was recently out at Irwindale’s 1/8th mile drags for some friendly heads-up drag racing and left some lasting impressions.

Outfitted with a 6.0L LQ9 GM truck motor, this is one of the coolest Jaguars we’ve seen. What’s even cooler is the fact that the motor is bored and stroked to 6.6-liters, bringing displacement up to 402 cubic inches from 366. Aside from the motor being almost bone stock, a 76mm turbo was put to good use and is boosting at a healthy 12 PSI, producing a total output of 720 horsepower.

This XJ is in great condition for being more than thirty years old and still has a great looking interior with the addition of some Simpson racing harnesses and an unobtrusive roll cage.

While not being the lightest car at the track and having a full interior, the fastest pass made in the Jaguar was the pass shown in the video. A personal best of 6.88 at 102 MPH shows that the car means business and that there is still a lot of power to be made with this setup.

The part about the car that we like most is the subtle external wastegate dump pipe that routes exhaust gasses out right behind the front passenger side tire. It really isn’t noticeable unless under heavy load, but if you know what you’re looking at, you’ll know not to mess with this stealthy sleeper!
