Video: Z/28 Camaro’s Aero Kit Explained by Mark Stielow

The new Z/28 Camaro is one of the most anticipated vehicles to come from Chevrolet since the C7 Corvette, which was a huge hit. While we’ve seen quite a few videos about the Z/28, we haven’t seen a video that talks in depth about the new aero kit – luckily when we were surfing the LS1Tech Forums, we came across Car And Driver’s new video from their Youtube channel with the Z/28’s Program Engineering Manager, Mark Stielow, talking about the functionality of the aero kit.

With the car’s whole aero package designed at the General Motors Aerodynamics Laboratory, or GMAL, and tested at GM’s own Milford Proving Grounds, every aspect of the Z/28 was intended for full functionality. The first part of the aero kit that Stielow talks about is the rather large front splitter, which is steel-reinforced and can handle 200 pounds of aerodynamic downforce. Behind the front splitter is a partial belly-pan that helps close off the underside of the car for less drag and better air flow.

Stielow also talks about how the upper grille is opened up as much as possible and about the use of the Flow-tie Chevy emblem – it’s pretty cool how opening up the middle of the emblem resulted in better cooling! Stielow also talks about how the Z/28 sits 33mm lower than the 1LE and how the hood vents are virtually the same, but on the Z/28 the mesh is removed, and it’s a carbon fiber vent to save as much weight as possible.

One of our favorite parts of the car is the wickerbill spoiler and how it’s such a subtle piece, but makes a big difference in downforce when adjusted for the right conditions – Chevy really outdid themselves with this Camaro, and we can’t wait to get some seat time in it, but for now, we’ll have to live vicariously through internet videos until we get our grubby paws on one.

Also from Car And Driver’s Youtube channel, we have a video of Stielow explaining the chassis of the Z/28 and a video of two Z/28’s getting down at Barber Motorsports Park – enjoy!
