Throwback Thursday: Straightening-Out Our Steering Troubles

Ready or not, the week is finally coming to an end. That’s right, it’s time for another Throwback Thursday. Each week we take a look back through the Power Automedia vaults and locate an article we feel is worthy of another look. This week, we are taking a very short trip back to February 2019, to check out, Borgeson Universal Straightens-Out Our Steering Troubles.

If you own a classic car — better yet, a beater of a classic car, you know the troubles of dealing with worn-out parts. Going through the checklist of components that need replacing can be a daunting task. Such was the case for a 1972 Monte Carlo, owned by Vinny Costa.

The Monte’s box was worn and leaking, which is a common problem for many enthusiasts. That’s why swapping it for a completely new unit from Borgeson is a good idea.

Vinny wrote, “The car was purchased on the cheap, with the hopes in mind of creating a budget sleeper. Subsequently, it went through a host of changes and upgrades. Some things not yet touched were the suspension, steering, and brakes.

In the original article, Vinny tackled the steering with the help of Borgeson. The box he installed was a new 12.7:1 ratio, which equates to the steering wheel having less than three turns lock-to-lock. “It’s done with a nice effort to it, so you feel like you’re driving the car, and not floating all over the road,” says Jeff Grantmeyer of Borgeson.

If you are planning on doing this, we highly recommend the help of a friend — one person to hold the box in place, while the other guides the coupler onto the splined shaft.

Once installed, Vinny put eh box through its paces by driving through some very twisty roads in the Tehachapi mountain range, but you’ll have to read the original article to get all the details.

Suffice to say, there’s a lot more in-depth insight in this informative article. That definitely makes it worthy of a second look. For that reason, I selected, Borgeson Universal Straightens-Out Our Steering Troubles, as this week’s Throwback Thursday showcase article.
