Video: A PerfectFit Five-Speed Upgrade For C3 Vettes

A company’s reputation is always earned the hard way. This is usually accomplished by getting respect from the enthusiasts that use their products. Silver Sport Transmissions (SST) has built that kind of reputation. One of the ways SST keeps enthusiasts coming back is the company’s desire to continually improve. Case in point, the addition of the TREMEC TKX to the PerfectFit line of SST products. This video shows an installation of the Silver Sport Transmissions Tremec PerfectFit kit in a C3 Corvette. It is a spot-on fit!

Taco Joe’s Corvette.

The video explains how the Youtube poster, a gearhead that calls himself Taco Joe, avoided the highways due to a lack of overdrive gear in his C3 Vette. First, we want to give Joe major props for adopting the Taco nickname. Nobody hates Tacos so he is immediately likable.

Taco Joe clearly states the issue, and what his plan is. Although he loves his Corvette he realizes there is a performance gap in the car’s highway ability. The fix for this problem is adding an overdrive gear. It just so happens that Silver Sport Transmissions makes a living by modifying modern TREMEC transmissions that will directly fit into most vintage hot rods.

Taco Joe doesn’t hold back the spice when explaining why he picked a Silver Sport Transmissions’ PerfectFit kit. “I did my homework,” he said. “Some of the engineers at Silver Sport are the same engineers that designed TREMEC transmissions in the first place.”

What Makes It A PerfectFit Kit?

According to Mr. Taco, there are three things that make a PerfectFit kit a perfect fit for vintage cars. First is the modifications that are made to the transmission housing and shifter by SST. Next are the custom brackets made by the company, and finally, the inclusion of a driveshaft.

The shifter is relocated where it fits properly and still offers clean and crisp shifts.

Watching the video, we can see how those three things work to make the swap a simple process. Taco thought ahead and planned to do a complete engine and transmission swap at the same time. However, the PerfectFit kit can be installed without pulling the engine. It’s just a lot more fun to get some fresh muscle in front of the new gearbox before you hit the open road.

It is a perfect fit.

In the end, we see the PerfectFit kit installation was very easy and straightforward. Taco Joe seemed pleased by the end result and dare we say, the next trip for fresh tortillas could be a more pleasant drive.
