For some, going fast has always been part of the game. While there are certainly those who prefer to build their cars to display at car shows or to putter around town, we’re talking about the enthusiasts who just can’t get enough SPEED! Check out one such individual in the video above, as he shows off his 1,000+ hp Bonneville-racing ’29 Ford to USA TODAY host Chris Woodyard.
If you’re a speed freak like many, the Bonneville Salt Flats should definitely be on your hot rod bucket list. Whether you’d like to go just to watch the action or to take part in the competition yourself, Bonneville will certainly push you and your ride to the edge and have you craving more.
Bruce Meyer is one of those guys who has checked Bonneville off his bucket list, but we certainly haven’t seen the last of him out there, we’re sure. That’s because just a couple years ago, Meyer broke into the famed 200mph Club with his modified ’29 Ford salt racer.
Now, for those of you thinking this is the same type of car that came off the Ford assembly line in 1929, you’re going to be sadly disappointed, as Meyer’s car was just built to resemble the old roadsters. With over 1,000 hp (from a Chevy engine mind you) under the body, we have a much greater appreciation for this more modernly-built race car.
Even though Meyer’s Ford is newer than the car it resembles, Meyer admits it still drives like a hot rod, at least in the sense that the amount of effort needed and the amount of movement by the car is similar at 200mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats as it would be for any old car to go flat-out on a dirt road. That didn’t stop him from taking the car all the way, telling Woodyard that he always saw the guys who raced roadsters on the salt flats as “the real deal.”
Said to be in his 70s, Meyer still has plenty of spunk in his step and as an avid car collector from Beverley Hills, California, we have a feeling that we might just see Meyers back out at Bonneville shooting for an even faster speed in his ’29 roadster!
