It’s a long way from furniture to supercars, but when Phil Frank puts his stamp on any of them, you know it’s a winner. As a consultant to and one-time VP of Design for Saleen, Frank was responsible for S7 supercar, among many other Saleen products. The relationship between Steve Saleen and Phil Frank continued under Saleen’s current SMS Supercars operation in Irvine, CA, until about a year ago. Frank has battled cancer and won.
Although it was some time coming, Frank must have been overjoyed to hear of the #50 Saleen S7R, campaigned by Larbre Competition, winning the GT1 class at last year’s 24 hour Le Mans race. The exotic supercar was initially powered by a naturally aspirated 7-liter V8 engine. Later, a twin turbocharged version delivered 750 hp and 0-60 mph time of 3.2 seconds.
One of the most exotic materials around, carbon fiber, has always fascinated Frank, who began building and selling CF furniture in 2008. Recently, Frank announced the creation of PFD Carbonworks to expand on his design and production activities.
While PFD’s initial projects are intended for the more exotic supercars, such as the Lamborghini Gallardo, Frank continues to drive a modified 550 hp Mustang, perhaps leaving some hope that future products for domestic performance cars might be possible.
