Classic truck enthusiasts know that transforming a vintage family hauler into a show stopping masterpiece takes immense vision and skill. The custom automotive community recently witnessed exactly that when a stunning 1965 Chevrolet Suburban secured its title as the second 2026 TMI Road Tour winner. Nicknamed “Papa Smurf,” this beautiful blue utility vehicle completely stole the spotlight at the HotRods N’ Heroes Show in Huntington Beach, California.

Owner Shannon Gaither built a machine that perfectly balances nostalgic charm with aggressive modern performance. Instead of a typical engine swap, the builder opted for a custom turbocharged 292 inline six engine featuring a prototype FiTech fuel injection system. This unique powerplant delivers enough torque to throw passengers back into their seats. The exterior highlights the debut of New Gen Wheels and their latest design called “The Ocho.” Industry veteran Theresa Contraras evaluated the field and noted, “The build exemplifies the level of excellence we want to celebrate.”

The true magic of this classic Suburban lives inside the massive cabin. Becoming the second 2026 TMI Road Tour winner requires absolute perfection in upholstery. The shop installed TMI Pro Classic Bucket Seats wrapped in premium distressed buck tan vinyl with matching microsuede inserts. A custom fiberglass center console flows seamlessly between the front seats. In the rear, two massive bench seats sit back to back to elegantly conceal a Kicker audio enclosure. An event spokesperson stated, “Papa Smurf stands as a powerful example of high end design.”

Tying the whole project together required serious attention to color matching. The builders coated the wheel centers in a vibrant Prismatic Tuscan Sun finish. They carried this golden hue throughout the engine bay to create a perfectly cohesive presentation.
Building a vehicle of this magnitude proves the classic truck scene continues to push creative boundaries. Fans eagerly anticipate seeing what rolls out at the upcoming tour stops in Texas and Tennessee later this season. For now, Papa Smurf stands tall as the ultimate benchmark and proudly wears the crown as the second 2026 TMI Road Tour winner.
