Experiencing aches and pains may be fairly typical as we get older, but one Granite City, Illinois man’s aches and pains at 75 years young aren’t what you might think! After all, he was in a nasty car accident back in the early 60s, which totalled his brand new 1963 Thunderbird and left him with a memento of sorts for over 50 years. Check out the NBC News video above to see just what we’re referring to.

Obviously, aches and pains are going to happen, especially if you were involved in some sort of major accident or had a major surgery, etc. But what surgeons found in 75-year-old Arthur Lampitt on Wednesday, December 31st isn’t exactly what you’d call a typical accident-related injury. That’s because in addition to being banged up pretty good in a car accident some 50 years ago, Lampitt walked away from the crash with a 7-inch turn signal lever in his arm.
According to NBC News, the turn signal lever in Lampitt’s arm went undetected for decades until it set off a metal detector about 10 years ago. Experiencing no pain or ill effects from the piece of metal at the time, Lampitt chose to just leave the lever alone inside his arm instead of having surgery. But after 50 years of being in his arm, the lever started causing swelling and pain for Lampitt recently, so he had the piece of metal removed from his arm this week.
While a look back at the old car crash photos revealed that the turn signal lever was missing from the car, it wasn’t confirmed to be the object in Lampitt’s arm until Wednesday. Corroded to the point where nearly half the chrome is gone, the lever will now live on as a memento of Lampitt’s accident, just not carried with him everywhere he goes…. that is unless he decides the Thunderbird part is actually in good enough condition still to make a key chain out of like he has discussed.
