Top 10 Highlights From 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed

Top 10 Highlights From 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed

Each summer the Goodwood Estate near Chichester in the south of England holds a four-day gathering known as the Goodwood Festival of Speed (FOS), one of the most significant car culture gatherings in the world.

The hill-climb commands a majority of the attention, but there’s a lot of other stuff going on, such as a full rally stage, a drifting arena, and an array of automaker displays that rivals those at many auto shows. While we’ve already covered the Ford GT Mk II debut, a few other Ford vehicles also caught our attention.

Here are some Ford highlights from the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed:

Europe’s First Look: 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

The 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 made its European debut at Goodwood with three-time world champion drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr. behind the wheel of its 760 horsepower V8. The GT500 ispowered by a hand-built, aluminum, supercharged 5.2-liter engine capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in the mid-3 second range, and has sub-11-second quarter-mile times.

More Mustang Fun With Vaughn Gittin Jr.

Vaughn Gittin also brought out his Spec 5-D Mustang RTR, the same record-breaking vehicle used last year when he became the first driver to drift all 13 miles of the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Gittin Jr.’s Mustang was developed to compete in Formula Drift and receives power from a 5.0-liter Ford Performance Aluminator XS V8 engine with a Vortech JT Trim Supercharger, and features a six-speed sequential Pfitzner Performance gearbox and carbon fiber body panels.

The Master of Hoon: Ken Block

Ken Block participated in the sideways antics with his one-of-a-kind 1977 Ford F-150 Hoonitruck. The rally-bred all-wheel drive performance monster has 914 horsepower, 702 lb-ft of torque, which looked pretty easy for Block as he drifted the Goodwood Hillclimb.

The truck made its debut in the Gymkhana TEN video last year. What makes it particularly unique is that it features the most significant 3D metal-printed part for a working vehicle in automotive history. The complex aluminum intake manifold was a collaboration between Ford research engineers in Europe, Ford Performance engineers, and RWTH Aachen’s Digital Additive Production Institute, in Germany.

During Goodwood, Block also showed off his new, dramatically styled retro Ford Escort RS Cosworth Widebody “Cossie V2.” Block developed the car after a fire claimed his 1991 Ford Escort Cosworth Group A rally car while competing last summer.

Ford Fiesta WRC Takes the Stage

Driven by M-Sport WRC driver Elfyn Evans, the Ford Fiesta WRC car was campaigned in the FIA World Rally Championship by the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team. It receives power from Ford’s 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine and has lightning-fast four-wheel drive performance on gravel tracks and paved roads.

Evans demonstrates high-speed runs on the Goodwood Hillclimb and Forest Rally Stage with the same driving precision that earned him his first WRC win at the Dayinsure Wales Rally GB last year.

Last month, Evans’ teammate, Teemu Suninen secured his best-ever result at Rally Italia Sardegna, with a second place overall finish in the Ford Fiesta WRC car. Currently, Evans and Suninen are fourth and fifth respectively in the drivers’ championship.

Ford Fusion NASCAR Racer in Europe

The NASCAR #22 Team Penske Ford Fusion offered a glimpse into one of Ford’s most successful U.S. motorsport programs by participating in the Goodwood Hillclimb.

Joey Logano claimed the driver’s championship in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in 2018 with the Fusion. True to stock car racing roots, the car is powered by a 5.8-liter Ford V8 rated with 775 horsepower, mated to a four-speed manual H-pattern transmission. Additionally, it is made from a Penske chassis, a steel tube frame, and features a hand-formed sheet metal body.

The Fusion was driven by Billy Johnson, who is considered the most successful driver of all time in the IMSA Continental Tire Championship.

Celebrating Capri with the Zakspeed Turbo

Ford introduced the Capri in 1969 and sold more than 1.9 million cars across its 17 years of production. The distinctive race car seen at Goodwood is the flame-spitting Zakspeed Turbo Capri built for DRM touring car and sports car racing series. It competed from 1980 to1982 and won the Division 2 championship in 1981 driven by Germany’s Klaus Ludwig.

A turbocharged 1.7-liter engine powers the Zakspeed Turbo Capri. The engine evolved from a Cosworth BDA engine based on Ford’s 1.3-liter Kent engine of the period.

The car is currently owned, and driven by Peter Mücke, founder of Mücke Motorsports and the father of Stefan Mücke, a driver for  Ford Chip Ganassi Racing and drove the Ford GT until the conclusion of the team’s racing program at Le Mans this year.

Ford GT Le Mans Racer Unleashed

Each of the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GTs’ that competed in the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race last month featured a special “celebration livery” to reflect Ford’s success at Le Mans.

The #66 Ford GT, driven by Stefan Mücke, features an exclusive black livery that pays homage to the Ford GT40 driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon who won Le Mans in 1966.

The #66 Ford GT was joined by the Ford GT MKII for a run during FOS.

Ford Debuts Puma and Kuga, Among Others

Following their introductions earlier this year, the three-story Ford Performance stand at FOS served as the stage to showcase the new Ford Kuga SUV and Ford Puma SUV-inspired crossover models.

The Kuga is regarded to be Ford’s most electrified vehicle to date. It features a sleek exterior design with premium proportions that deliver improved roominess and comfort.

Model variations include the Kuga Titanium, sporty Kuga ST‑Line, and upscale Kuga Vignale.

The European only Puma was also on display. It fuses stunning exterior design with uncompromised load space and sophisticated mild-hybrid powertrain technology.

The Ford stand also featured Forza Horizon 4 gaming pods. Gamers who set the fastest lap times had the chance to win a passenger ride in the Ranger Raptor with seven-time British motorsport champion Paul Swift.

The Ranger Raptor became available July 2 to off-road fans in the Xbox open-world racing game, Forza Horizon 4. Last year, the Ranger Raptor became the first ever vehicle launched at a video gaming event, at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany.

Swift showcased the Ranger Raptor’s high-speed off-road driving and go-anywhere capability at Goodwood’s Off-Road Arena.

The Ford Ranger Raptor is Europe’s best-selling pick-up, it comes powered by a bi-turbo version of Ford’s 2.0‑litre EcoBlue diesel engine and Ford’s 10-speed automatic gearbox.

Swift also drove the new Focus ST which made its debut at the Goodwood Hillclimb. The Focus comes powered by a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine topped with twin-scroll turbochargers – aided by optional Launch Control and rev-matching for its short-throw six-speed manual gearbox.

Other notable features of the Ford stand include a Ford Performance-inspired high-speed, high-thrill slide that takes riders around the stand structure.
