Did you know that today marks a significant milestone in automotive history?

It is true. On this day 117 years ago (June 4, 1896) Henry Ford first rolled out his invention he called the “Quadricycle.” The name probably speaks to the vehicle’s four bicycle tires it uses for rolling stock, and it runs on a twin cylinder internal combustion engine capable of a whopping four horsepower.

Although he only sold a handful of Quadricycles (they were quite expensive at the time at $200 apiece), Ford’s invention did give him the start he needed to eventually become one of the most successful businessmen in the world. Although he started out in a shop behind his home, by 1903 he had gone on to found Ford Motor Company.

And the rest, as they say, is history. Later on Ford was able to buy back the first Quadricycle he built and today it is on display at The Henry Ford museum.
