For some reason 1950s cars are rarely ever built as hot rods, with the exception of Tri-Five Chevys. Brandon of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, decided to challenge this status quo and build a blown 1955 Dodge Coronet Lancer. He built his ’55 Coronet to challenge the ’55 Chevy’s dominance of the street and the strip.
The 270 cubic Inch Hemi has been swapped for a herculean 440RB motor. The motor is hopped up using a performance manifold, MSD ignition and a B&M supercharger to make more power. The engine is tied to a rebuilt 727 torqueflite transmission which sends to the power to a pair of drag radials. This Coronet’s boat like handling has been improved thanks to Mustang II front suspension and it stop on short notice thanks to a set of disc brakes.
The supercharged 440 and it's ventilation on the hood.
Brandon wanted to his classic Mopar to look good in the parking lot of the local drive-in and be able to perform on Thunder road. To keep that vintage 1950s touch, the Coronet has been covered in a coat of Pearl White paint which has a hint of pink in it. Stepping into the interior is like stepping back into the ’50s. White & red leather wrap the doors, red fabric carpet covers the floor and a space age instrument panel greets the driver. The only modern feature is the radio which looks vintage but in reality it has modern CD and MP3 capabilities.
1950s Mopars are a rare sight these days and it’s even rarer to see one leaving it’s marks on the strip. Brandon has dared to be different and has created a rare ’50s Mopar hot rod. We don’t have any listed horsepower specs but we are sure this mean rod makes enough to give John Milner a run for his money. The Coronet is currently listed for sale on Craigslist. Now this is what we call a sleeper!
