In 1954, it was the largest corporate merger in U.S. history. The marriage of the Hudson Motor Car Company with Nash-Kelvinator Corporation created the American Motors Corporation (AMC). While the enterprise struggled at first, Ramblers became the nation’s third most popular car during the early ’60s.
AMC later became known for their new, popular muscle car offerings beginning in 1968 with the Javelin and AMX, as well as the earlier but less popular Marlin.
Along the way, AMC bought the Jeep name and product line. The company’s struggles never resolved themselves and in 1987, the company was bought by Chrysler. Without meaning to be unkind, AMC never broke out of fourth place among the domestic Big Three.
That, however, did not mitigate their many successes along the way. Most notable for muscle car enthusiasts were the Javelin and the AMX sports cars.
A strong and spirited band of those enthusiasts gathered recently for the 20th Annual East Coast AMC Day at Capitol Raceway in Crofton, MD. Organized by the Potomac Ramblers car club, the event collected a broad sample of AMC vehicles, both stock and modified.
Reporting on Autoholics.com, Paul Balze checked out the action in Crofton and posted a number of great shots from the show. You can check out all the details here.
If you have an interest in the AMC cars and history, consider checking out the 32 Annual AMCRC National Convention and Car Show which is coming up on July 14 – 16 in Annapolis, MD.
