With all of the hype surrounding the classic muscle car market these days, the amount of attention that nostalgia race cars of the era receive never seems to surprise us. We run across vintage Camaros, Chargers, Chevelles and others sporting all of their nostalgic paint schemes and decals at the main car auctions all of the time. We rarely, however, hear of AMC Javelins with established racing history becoming available through the open market. Today was one of days, and we came by way of this one through the Mecum Auction website. In this case, it was this ’68 that was one of three originally built in conjunction by Craig Breedlove, Joe Mondello, and Edelbrock Engineering.
The purpose of the three look-a-like Javelins was to compete at Bonneville Speed Spectacular’s C-Production class. This is the second car that was built by the trio of experts, and it achieved a top speed of 161mph (winning the contest) with Breedlove behind the wheel and set a record that stood for years.
Since it was trailered everywhere it’s whole life, the Javelin only shows a grand total of 19 miles on its odometer, and it includes a unique Edelbrock-designed intake manifold, a modified chassis courtesy of Breedlove’s shop, has only had three owners since 1968. A definite piece of American racing history, we’re anxious to see what kind of money this thing brings when the gavel drops on May 15th.
