A Photographic Look at Classic Muscle Car-Inspired Funny Cars

They come in all shapes and sizes but they all wear the body of a classic muscle car or hot rod. If you’re an automotive enthusiast, you’re probably familiar with the Nostalgic Funny Car dragsters that thunder down drag strips across the country all summer long. While these cars compete the same, are powered the same and sound the same as traditional funny cars, they add a bit of spice to the track with their production-based pre-1981 body styles.

With the 2012 March Meet this weekend, Bangshift has compiled 50 photos of nostalgic funny cars that they took between 2009 and now. Check out some of these fantastic cars below and more in Bangshift’s photo gallery.

Nostalgic Funny Cars and door slammers have been the two hottest drag racing classes in the country for the past 10 years. While there is plenty of action to be had on the drag strip regardless of class, Nostalgic Funny Cars and door slammers have won the hearts of Americans with their extreme power and likeness to classic cars.

Funny cars got their start in the mid-60s and were called such because of their shortened wheel base, which brought the rear wheels forward to help with the car’s weight transfer during racing. Although these cars looked similar to production cars at the time, they sported huge rear wheels on the shorter wheelbase that made the cars look “funny.”

Nostalgic Funny Cars bring classic muscle back to the track in a powerful way

While all funny cars are fun to watch, it is the Nostalgic Flops that draw so many people in with their charming good looks. Most nostalgic racers can be found running match races across the country or participating in the now growing number of Nostalgic Funny Car series.

While some of the cars that Bangshift has photographed over the past couple years are now parked, wrecked or overseas some where, others remain as competitors on local tracks. Check out more photos of these impressive cars in Bangshift’s gallery and watch for them at the 2012 March Meet going on right now at Auto Club Famoso Raceway outside of Bakersfield, California.
