The Pontiac brand had its share of high-performance rides, but the Tempest was never lumped into that category. Shaw Davis from AutotopiaLA found one sweet 1967 Tempest that was built to cruise but still has plenty of horsepower to make it a killer ride.
Johnny, the owner of this Tempest, doesn’t fit the mold of your typical car guy, but that didn’t stop him from putting this Pontiac together. The Pontiac bug bit Johnny after a friend took him for a ride in a rowdy 1964 GTO, and from that point forward he became a car guy. So, Johnny set out to find a Pontiac to build and he settled on a 1964 Tempest and got to work.
The original 326 cubic-inch Pontiac mill that powered the Tempest has been replaced by a 455 cubic-inch engine. Johnny added a set of iron 6X Pontiac heads to the big block, along with a healthy camshaft to improve the engine’s performance. This helped Johnny keep the car all-Pontiac just like he wanted and helped it make plenty of naturally aspirated horsepower. The Pontiac’s sexy tone is generated by a set of Doug’s Headers and Flowmaster mufflers. Johnny added a pair of electronic cutouts that allow him to really unleash the Pontiac’s voice when he’s feeling spicy.
Johnny selected a set of New Gen wheels for the Tempest, and they really give the car a modern feel. Up front, Johnny added a set of big Wilwood brakes to help slow the Pontiac down. The car also rides on a complete air suspension, this lets Johnny set the ride height to whatever he desires. Johnny has even taken the Tempest for a spin on the autocross course, so this Pontiac is fairly agile.
