ACT’s New GM Clutch Kits Can Handle Up To 1,470 Lb.-Ft. of Torque

ACT Clutch is now offering twin-disc clutch kits for 26-spline and 10-spline GM applications covering most muscle cars and classics. Best of all, ACT’s new clutches are rated to take a beating from upwards of 1,470 pound feet of torque.

Most of us spend countless hours and dollars maximizing our hot rod’s power. But all that hard-earned horsepower will go to waste if we can’t get it from the crank to the rear wheels, and that means having a clutch that’s up to the job. That’s why we were excited to hear about Advanced Clutch Technology’s new line of twin-disc clutches for GM 26-spline and 10-spline applications which are designed to handle between 875 and 1,470 pound feet of torque depending on the model.

More discs means more friction surfaces, which means more torque capacity. More torque capacity from the clutch discs also means more streetable pressure plates can be used for a lighter pedal feel.

A great deal of those incredible torque ratings is thanks to the twin-disc design. “Twin disc clutches offer twice as many surfaces as a single disc,” says Daniel Starksen, Research Analyst at ACT. “That means more friction surfaces to transfer torque and more surface area to better dissipate heat.”

That added surface area means that these powerful clutches can also be made more street friendly when combined with the proper pressure plate. Starksen tells us, “Most models of our new twin-discs offer a similar to stock pedal feel. Most people don’t notice pedal difference other than the more positive engagement of the clutch. Even the highest rated clutches have a moderate pedal effort.” By choosing from the six different twin-discs offered for 26-spline and 10-spline applications, you can pick a clutch with the torque capacity you need as well as the level of pedal effort and engagement you are looking for.

Another factor that adds to the streetability of these clutches is their quiet operation. The new ACT GM twin-discs use ACT’s proprietary Positive Lift Floater System, which relies on straps rather that posts to locate the floater and assure quiet and trouble-free alignment. The proprietary design also provides quiet operation and progressive modulation during engagement.

The streetability of these clutches may be a huge benefit, but if you have upwards of 1,000 pound feet of torque in your classic GM car or truck, there’s a very good chance you’ll be spending plenty of time at the drag strip. That’s exactly why all of ACT’s new GM twin-discs are SFI 1.2 certified for hardcore racing duty. Also, all of ACT’s new GM twin-disc clutch kits come with a 168-tooth forged chrome-moly steel flywheel. These flywheels feature a one-piece design with an integrated ring gear, which means even less chance of failure. The flywheels are all internally balanced in addition to the entire clutch unit being dynamically balanced all together before it leaves ACT’s facilities.
