Now here’s a car that ought to make you look twice: an original A990 Coronet from 1965. It’s for sale on eBay with less than three days left until the auction ends, and the bidding has leveled off at just over $60,000.
For all you MOPAR fans, you should already know what makes this car a jewel in Dodge’s crown. For everyone else, suffice it to say, this thing was built for the express purpose of going fast.
It started back in the day with the banishment of the 426 HEMI engines from NASCAR’s 1965 circuit. The year before, Chrysler had won 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place at the Daytona 500 with HEMI-equipped Belvederes.
This upset the NASCAR bigwigs, who barred any further use of the massive motors in stock car racing until they were made available to the general public. Chrysler duly withdrew themselves from NASCAR, and instead went about constructing these A990 super stock cars to be used in drag racing.
About 200 of these cars were produced, half in Coronets and half in Belvederes. Modifications were extensive and costly, and included steps for installing magnesium intake manifolds and dual Holley carburetors, as well as gutting the interiors and shrinking the wheelbase to 115 inches.
When all was said and done, the A990 car proved itself as a leaner, meaner B-body. It had a beefy compression ratio of 12.5:1 and began winning and setting records just as fast as people could get them delivered.
So it’s not a light matter that a Coronet like this, especially one so award-winning and immaculately kept, is found on eBay. It’s also noteworthy that much of the car has been kept the same over the years–the metalwork, 426 engine, 727 Torqueflite transmission, and more–except the paint job, which was still done in period-correct color.
The owner has several authenticating documents, and furthermore promises to reveal unmentioned items to the winner when the dust settles. At $60,100 at the time of this writing, the reserve has yet to be surpassed.
Is this Coronet all it’s cracked up to be? Or should you dodge this Dodge? Let us know in comments.
