As you’re probably well aware, Back To The Future Day was on the 21st. Almost a week later, some of us are still clinging to the nostalgia associated with the deified trilogy. If you fall into this category, then take a gander at the Italians’ tribute: a decked-out, 2017 Ford GT “time-machine”.
As is common knowledge, the original car used in the Back To The Future films was a DeLorean DMC-12 – a 3,000-pound, 2-door coupe, complete with gull-wing doors and a stainless steel body. The car wasn’t too impressive performance-wise and was only in production from 1981-83, but since its appearance in the films it has become a well-known collector car.
New versus old: OmniAuto's concept is surprisingly accurate.
Unlike its predecessor, however, this tribute concept (conceived by the fellas at OmniAuto.it) uses the brand new GT as a base. Between things like the twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter V6 powerhouse (pushing upwards of 600 horsepower) and the use of hand-laid carbon fiber, this state-of-the-art take of Doc Brown’s famous machine packs more of a ‘modern’ punch.
Despite blowing the DeLorean out of the water performance-wise, though, the GT rendition stays true to the classic with all the quintessential accessories. As you can see in the photos, the concept holds up to the original by donning the iconic flux capacitor, Mr. Home Energy Reactor, and other gadgets and gizmos that afforded the DeLorean its time-traveling capabilities. Most of the details and traits that made the car from the movie so special are apparent in this GT version, and that makes it pretty cool. The GT’s styling and figure fit the ‘time-machine’ vibe rather well, too, making the concept just fun to look at.
Stock DeLorean versus stock GT: It's amazing how much cars have changed in 30 years.
But perhaps this is too radical; maybe Ford’s new GT can’t take the place of the classic DeLorean, even as a concept. Whether you’re familiar with the films or not, we want to know your thoughts on OmniAuto’s tribute. Let us know what you think in the comments below.
