Baer Brakes Offers More Than Just Brakes

btsMany of the Pro-Touring groups have adopted the trend of lowering their muscle cars to get a lower center of gravity and better handling for their vehicle. Lowering the car can alter the caster and camber of the vehicle’s front wheels and lead to an unsafe driving condition however. These ride height modifications can cause a dynamic change in the toe-in or toe-out of the front tires as the suspension articulates through its range of motion. This sudden change in toe-in and toe-out is commonly referred to as “bump-steer.”

The folks at Baer Brakes have a solution for bump-steer.

Steering geometry can be changed by modifying the ride height.

What Is Bump Steer?

Baer Trackers allow adjustability in the tie-rods to compensate for ride height and suspension geometry changes on suspension articulation.

When the suspension is lowered or the caster or camber is altered, the position of the steering arm is also changed. Depending on the suspension geometry, this can lead to an undesirable steering input as the suspension compresses or extends in its travel.

Simple maneuvers, such as hard braking, cornering, or traveling over road-surface irregularities, compress the suspension and compromise the tie rod’s movement by pushing it to the limit of its articulation range as it attempts to track the arc of the steering arm. As suspension movement is altered, a sudden change in “toe in”/”toe out” can occur, unsettling the suspension and giving the vehicle a tendency to dart.

Baer Brakes offers Baer Trackers to solve the bump-steer problem. The pin-height-adjustable tie rods allow compensation for ride height and suspension geometry changes, enabling an optimal range of articulation. If you raise or lower your suspension, bump-steer is one issue that you need to be aware of.
